The stunt cycle my Grandma gave me for Christmas was without question the best toy I ever had. It far surpassed G.I. Joe's Mobile Support Unit in terms of sheer coolness and durable, exciting action. The poor fellow met his unfortunate demise after attempting to make the leap from the roof of our Montana home to the driveway below. The memories lived on...

Until I found Evel in a Cracker Barrel store on the way to my folks' home for Christmas!!! I had my wife distract the kids after lunch as I clandestinely purchased the coveted toy and hid him in the car. I was thrilled as my son opened his new toy on Christmas morning, and I showed him how to lock the gyro drive into place with a goofy grin plastered on my face. I eagerly slid Evel into place and smiled as the gears reved, anticipating his speedy departure from the gate and through the hoop of fire. However...

Evel went about eight yards and fell over. Feeling as I must have done something wrong, I tried again. And again. I switched surfaces and tried again, feeling that maybe my memories of a speeding, wheelie-popping Evel were exagerated by time?

Fortunately, my older brother arrived the next day, and after witnessing the pathetic capabilities of the new Evel he assured me that the Evel of Old was most definitely a more prolific and capable seeker of thrills. This one flat out sucked.

My attempts to relive my childhood had been cruelly thwarted. Worse yet, my son has yet to witness the dramatic action I had so trustingly promised would be provided by my plastic daredevil buddy. Please help if you have had the same experience with this imposter. Ideal Toys states that this toy has been carefully crafted from the original molds. But if the original Evel preformed like this one, he would have surely plummeted the company into bankruptcy, disappointed countless kids from the 70's, and could have possibly plummeted the Earth into a millineum of darkness. The legacy of the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle must not be tainted by shoddy craftsmanship and broken dreams! Evel should remain a hammer, not an anvil!!!

I just received the Evel Knievel Signature Set that is a backtobasics.com exclusive as a Christmas present from my wife who reluctantly supports her husbandÕs eccentric interests. This set, at present, can only be purchased from Back to Basics toys. This set includes replicas of the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle, Dragster, and Funny car, and a DVD of Evel Knievels best jumps. The set includes one of each vehicle, one energizer, and one Evel Knievel figure with correct belt and helmet. This set also includes a numbered certificate of authenticitly for those with an interest in such things. I have been very curious about this set since seeing it online and in the backtobasics catalog. I love the idea of IDEAL using the old EK molds to make new replicas of the vintage EK toys. So, I couldnÕt wait to get my hands on this set and see how close the vehicles are to the originals.

IÕll start off by saying that this is an excellent set...only to offset any nitpicky points IÕm about to make. First off, the packaging is a bit of a disappointment. The set originally sold for $100, so I expected it to arrive in full retail style packaging. The set arrived in a plain white box with a plain sticker on the outside stating that the contents inside were the Evel Knievel Signature Edition from Back to Basics toys. I like neat packaging and it was a bit of a disappointment to see this expensive set come in such a plain box. I realize that this may not me an issue to most people.

I was not disappointed by the contents inside however. The stunt cycle is the same chrome cycle that is part of the 2006 Super Stunt Cycle set that is an excellent reproduction of the vintage set. The Evel Knievel figure and energizer are also the same as what you receive the Stunt Cycle set...both excellent and very true to the vintage originals. The dragster is a nearly perfect spot-on copy of the vintage Dragster. The decals are good replicas of the set that came with the vintage Dragster and come pre-applied. The parachute looks spot-on, as well, and seems to be made of the same Òhefty bagÓ type plastice. The dragster itself looks and runs just like the vintage one including the parachute mechanism that ejects the parachute when the dragster wheelies. This new replica of the dragster looks and runs extremely close the vintage original and is obviously produced from the vintage molds, just as advertised.

The Funny Car seems to be the perfect copy of the original that the dragster is. The decals all look just like their vintage counterparts (again, pre-applied) and the vehicle opens just like it should. Again, itÕs quite obvious that the vintage molds were used on this vehicle, as well. With both the funny car and the dragster, it would be difficult to tell the difference between the replica and a vintage original in the same condition if they were sitting side by side. The people at the new IDEAL have produced excellent replicas of these toys we enjoyed as children.

Sticky issues: I do wish this set had come in nice packaging. For the price, frankly, I think more should be included. How about an energizer for each vehicle (3 different colors) instead of just one for all three? and/or how about an Evel figure for each vehicle? One of each of the vintage Evel figures...one white, one red, and one blue. The included instructions are for the pre-released Òfire hoopÓ stunt cycle set (really a replica of the vintage Trail Bike) and are not specific to this set. Again, for the price, I donÕt think itÕs out-of-line to expect new instructions and, perhaps, some kind of documentation about the vintage vehicle and why producing replicas should be a big deal to anyone. In Òmy worldÓ a company producing Knievel toy replicas is a pretty big deal. There should be more ÒfanfareÓ when you open the box. And lastly, how hard would it be to include the Òswagger stick?Ó

Warm Fuzzies: The vehicles themselves are excellent, fun replicas of the vintage vehicles we loved as children. New, nearly perfect replicas of the greatest toys ever produced in the history of the world! How great is it to open perfect, NEW Evel Knievel toys in 2006?!!!

IDEAL, bring on the Skycycle!!!!!...with a real box.

Merry Christmas!

I just woke up on Christmas morning and thought of this toy. I remember how badly I wanted this thing, and how many times I asked my parents to get it for me. There was a shortage here in Baltimore, MD., and I overheard my mother talking with a friend of hers about how many stores she had been to without any luck. I was crushed. BUT.. as moms often do, she came thru! I played with that thing all day that Christmas. Years later I found out how mom got it for me. She was walking in Toyr-R-Us ans saw a guy walk out of the stock room with three of the cycles (Seems he had just found the last three of them). Mad mothers rushed him, and by the time my mom reached the guy, he only had one left. As mom grabbed it from him, some other mom tried to grab it out of mom's hands. Turns out, my mother body slammed this poor lady and knocked her on her @$$. Mom's rock!

you don't want to get a full rev and get it close to your sisters hair, i'll tell you that ! ! ! But other than that, it was the best toy I had. I washed the suit and it never really fit right again, then I gave him concrete burns to the side of his head, broke his foot off, etc. That little guy could take a hammer, i'll tell you ! I would love to have another one to give to my sons.

Hello Evel Fans, When I found out that the Evel Stunt Cycle was back on the market I was excited beyond belief, maybe a little too much. I remember how durable the bike was as a child and how I would experiment with all sorts of jumps. It is truly the best toy ever made. At the writing of this letter I am 38 years old and feel like a kid again and my friends at work feel the same way. Us men (Kids) are planning on getting the bikes and setting up a big jump at work. We all work at a TV station and plan on shooting the whole thing. It's going to be great. I recently found out that when I was kid my neigbor threw my stunt set in the trash because it was left in his yard when he came home from work one day. He always told his kids if they left their toys in the yard he would throw them away. No more tears for me because soon I will jump again! Jeff

I had the bike and wore the cogs off the winder to power it up! Evil jumped everything and even had the scars to prove it, losing a leg in one nasty accident! I went on to get the dragster with parachute and the motorhome, but the bike remained my favourite. I could never bring myself to use the motorhome and to this day its still boxed in a cupboard at mum and dads, even all the tools are still in the tool box! I just cant imagine kids today wanting to spend entire days making jumps and winding up a toy bike and watching a guy in the jumpsuit fly thru the air!! Happy days :)

I found mine and opened it on Christmas Eve while my parents were out. I had such good fun, I flattened the batteries. I couldn't pack it back up in the flimsy Christmas paper so cried my eyes out because I new I had been caught. Come Christmas morning, I could not use it properly as I had flattened the batteries the night before so had to be content with pushing it around and jumping cars and canyons off home made ramps. The biggest 'toy' memory of my childhood. Top toy!

I'm a long time fan of Evel Knievel toys and I just picked up the new Evel Knievel Super Stunt Cycle that is produced by Ideal (Poof-Slinky) with the old Ideal toy molds. This is not the one that comes with all the bricks, fire hoop, and jump ramp but rather the new one for 2006 that only comes with a winder, a motorcyle, and a figure. It seems many buyers had problems with "Fire hoop" set's ability to mimic the playability of the classic set. However, I must say that I'm very, very pleased with the new Super Stunt Cycle set that has just been released. This one is much, much closer to the original toy I played with for hours and hours as a kid. It runs, sounds, and feels exactly like I remember my EK stunt cycle back in the early seventies. The "Fire Hoop" version seemed to be a bit too loud and didn't seem to travel as fast or as far as the orginals. However, this new 2006 cycle delivers on all fronts as far as I'm concerned and it sounds like IDEAL really listened to the problems fans had with the first version. This time the Evel figure is MUCH closer to the original. He sports an original looking full-face helmet and a functioning belt with plastic clasp just like the original. This figure is a very close replica of the 70's original. It would almost be difficult to pick him out of a line-up of same-condition vintage Evel figures. The stunt cycle itself is also very close with some key differences. This time the bike is decked out all in chrome rather than white plastic which looks very nice IMO. Graphics, with the exception of one sticker, are now painted on and look quite nice. A miniature replica of Evel's signature is even on the gas tank.

Other differences from the 70's versions (and this is REALLY nitpicking) The "V" on Evel's chest is screenprinted rather than stitched on applique but looks excellent. As mentioned before, the bike is now mostly chrome. The metal pegs on the original for positioning on the "charger" are now part of the mold and are quite sturdy. A small fender (a hold over from the trail bike replica) now rests over the front tire. This doesn't look bad but doesn't need to be there considering the original stunt cycle was sans the fender. The winder/charger now has Evel Knievel stickers adorning several sides which also look excellent (frankly, it would have been nice if the original 70's set had come with stickers to decorate the charger base.).

So, to summarize...in my opinion, this is an excellent set. It's obvious when comparing the vintage set to the reproduction, that the original molds have indeed been used to produce this new set. The bike and charger even sport the original 1972 and 1973 copyright dates as part of their molds. I highly recommend this set to anyone that "pines" for an authentic experience of playing with an original EK Stunt Cycle set but can't afford a vintage one or doesn't want to put a vintage set through hard paces. I've had a blast running my new set over high jumps at very high speeds and, so far, the set runs like new and is holding up extremely well. This seems to be a very durable set that sounds and plays exactly like the original.

As an aside, I'd love to see Ideal (Poof-Slinky) release an even more authentic version of this set (for us die-hards) complete with correct color scheme and reproduction vintage box. I'd also love to see them continue to expand this line with such items as the Sky Cycle and Chopper.

My all time favorite toy. I would make ramps out of books, boards, whatever I could find. He would jump stuff and land upright. Liked using the holder in the back to make him stand on the back of the seat and do wheelies. These are back now, made from the original Ideal molds, and I got one for my kid for Christmas.

From memory ,the year was 1976,I was introduced to the stunt man and the bike & said so long, to the jolly fat man.Santa was quickly dismissed when my Dad took me to a notso local toy warehouse and purchased the best toy a boy could have wanted.I witnessed the whole transaction! It's trgically ironic that the best and worst days in a young childs life could happen in an instance.Best toy ever I'm a Dad now & my son is 4 just like I was then .I'm desperate to find a similar toy!p.s great site.

We had a 50 yard double car width drive way. I could swear that I could crank Evel up so much that I could make him travel the whole distance. Of cours I was 5 years old then and the reality of my perceptions may have been a bit different. My dad loved Evel and introduced me to him as a very young age. When the Evel Kneivel Stunt Stadium showed up at my birthday party I was blown away. Thanks dad. You did good. Love your son.

What a toy! This was one of the coolest toys as I remember. Very durable too, I remember when I first got it how you had to assemble the launcher by inserting the crank in the base. Many a times a I tried to disassemble it for kicks but never could. Lost the helmet but Evel kept riding he was dangerous like that. My spoiled cousin, one of the great toy-breakers of our time, had the funny car dragster...yeah it sucked, nothing was better than the motorcycle!!!!

I remember playing with my Evel Knievel stunt cycle in the driveway. I played with it so much I would get a blood blister on my hand and that is when I started using a glove to crank the handle. Later I got the van and would jump the cycle over the van using the ramp that came with the van.

Too funny that I should stumble onto this site. Me and my brother played with this toy for many hours at a time. Ramps were built with plywood and dirt and he would take flight. If memory serves me right , we had several of these. The Evel Cycle could take a beating!! It is truely baffling how my own children cannot imagine playing with such a SIMPLE toy these days. Evel is from a lost generation of toys, ie GI Joe, that provide me with the fondest memories ever of my own childhood!! Thanks for the site!!

I remember when I got my Evel Knievel,it was the coolest and still is!!..The first thing I did was grab my sisters Barbie doll and some multi colored building blocks and made a ramp so that Evel could do jump stunts. Using Barbie, I stacked the blocks and put her underneath the ramp for support!!! Ken watched as the horror unfolded. Man that thing was "geared up good".It would go up a wall if ya wound it up high enough!!

This was the best toy I ever owned!!!! Just thinking of the days spent during the summer holidays trying to perfect the best jump and landing, brings a lump to my throat for simpler times. Can't really say what happened to mr knievel or his stunt bike, but I would like to think he has settled down with sindy or pippa and has produced a new generation of dare devils!!!

I got my Evel from Santa when I was 5 years old and I can't remember a toy that I loved more than that one. I remember getting up Christmas morning and discovering Evel in his box sitting under the real tree. Imagine that huh, a real tree. I was so excited, I ran into my parent's room and woke my mother up screaming "He brought it, he brought it! Santa brought Evel Knieval!" Then I tore back into the living room to set Evel up on his base and watch him do his thing across the hardwood floors. Man, the wheelies, and the sheer speed of that beautiful bike. My mother got up and started to make coffee and in the middle of a huge yawn looked at the clock. It was 2:00 AM. She made me go back to bed, but let me take Evel and his bike with me like some stuffed teddy bear. I fell asleep with him and the bike tucked under one arm. It was the only time I ever fell asleep that easily on Christams Eve. That was the best toy ever. It was the age of innocence. I miss you Evel.

I was the coolest kid on the block for a couple of weeks. I still have Evel and his helment. I'm currently Looking for the Stunt Cycle on ebay. I've almost replaced all my favorite toys that my mom gave away. Just got a working Might Mike. Still looking for an M16 Sound O' Power.

I loved my Evil Knievel toys! I had the white motorcycle, the red chopper (and yes, he wore a matching red suit!). I even had the van with the flip down ramp. It had lots of red tools, fire extinguisher, and even a coffee pot! I used to play with that toy for hours...and you could tell. After a while, the wire inside the figures started poking through the wrists. DId that stop me? I'm sure now there'd be a recall of those toys if it were today. Still, I had a blast. Eventually, the van became a part of the Star Wars universe...I inserted a piece of paper over the vinyl on board inserts with the Rebel Alliance logo. An old GI Joe 6 wheel ATV served as a great Imperial shuttle (It seated 9 comfortably! LOL). I didnt have a ton, but I made it last!

i remember cranking the handle to the stunt cycle, and my knuckles were so scabbed, and bloodied, from slipping and scrapeing on the pavement. i had tried to modify the hiet of the crank, but with limited rescources, i remember wearing a rabbit fur mitten, to avoid further knuckle damage. i often wondered, back in 74, when i was 8 yrs old.....why didnt they make a left handed crank?

I have great memories of the Evel Knievel stunt bike as i worked for the Ideal toy company in high wycombe making them. My job was a line boy and i had to make sure that the women on the conveyor belt had all the parts to assemble the bikes. We sometimes put three of four Evel figures in one box so a lucky kid would get a nice suprise ! oy i had a great time there !

The best toy ever! Mine jumped many stairs from record album ramps. It most surly inspired my first jump, five steps of the front porch, and first broken bone, nose. 30 years and a few more broken bones later I wish I still had that toy,and the nerve I had then.

Oh boy, do I remember THIS toy. This was just before or right after Evil jumped, or attempted to jump, the Snake River Canyon. Two doors down our street was a creek with sloping cement sides. I was going to attempt to jump our version of Snake River. I even went so far as to go to each house on the street to alert them of the fantastic stunt that was about to happen. I think he cracked up, but it was a blast. I'll bet the neighbors still think I am a weirdo!

The Evel Knievel Toy is a Legend in my memory. I got all my friends to buy one, so we could "pump-up" as hard as we could, to make the Record Jump of all! I did a Social Studies Report (biography) of Evel K. using the suit off the action figure after two years of play. This was soon after the second jump of "double decker" buses(London). I received the Highest grade in the class..A++ and got to stand up and tell, my Legends story. Still have today. Thank you Evel Knievel !!!

Wow does this bring back memories! My cousin had Evel Knievel and I had I guess what you would call his female counterpart, Dare Devil Debbie...we would spend HOURS racing them in the house, down the driveway...anywhere...and arguing who was better, faster, etc!!! Now these toys took a beating but seemed to last forever unlike how they make toys now! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

If Evil had the suspension systems on his bikes like we have now he would not have crashed as much and would have made longer and higher jumps. EVIl IS THE GOD FATHER OF EXTERM SPORTS. As a kid I played with my stunt cycle all the time until the day it just would not run. I am currently looking to replace my stunt cycle so that I can pass down the love for it to my son…

I had the Jet Bike ,which wasnt initially the one i wanted as my mate had the stunt bike but i think my dad thought it best if i had a different one ,however it went further than the stunt bike and was fairly robust as it had to be having done hundreds of leaps from the top of the stairs!!! Evel went on to become great friends with Action Man and Buck Rodgers though having not had a sister (thus no dolls) he never found love !!!!!!!!

I had Evel, the StuntCycle, Stunt Stadium, and Scramble Van...and they all provided several years of entertainment... until one day some older "pyro" kids in the neighborhood talked me into making Evel jump over a wall of fire, "It will be cool" they said .. They lit a metal automotive drip pan ablaze with charcoal lighter fluid and directed me to aim it toward the pine board ramp. Of course Evel "looped it"(no wheelie bars, his exhaust pipes were well worn down at this point)after hitting the 1/2 inch lip at the base of the aproach ramp, flipped over, skidded on his back and tumbled into the searing flames, Everybody was roaring with laughter including me until I realized Evel's clothes were burning up and the rubber tires on the bike melted into a smoldering mess...nobody thought about how to handle a mishap should one occur...I retrieved Evel after the fames died out...but the bike never ran again and he had no more jump suit....I guess he was forced into naked retirement at that point. Not sure what ever happened to him. He's probably in that great toybox in the sky next to a can of my Lincoln Logs.

Here is what happend. In 1975 at the ripe old age of 5, I had this stunt cycle and action figure set. I believe my uncle Peppy got it for my 5th birthday. Needless to say it was my favorite toy on earth. My favorite thing to do was to wind it up in my driveway and launch it across the steet to may neighbors driveway, I remember doing that for days. My dad use to advise me to watch out for the cars, I could care less because as a kid you really don't look for cars. Well....one day after kindergarten class was over, I proceeded to play... I launched it a few times and one the final run, BANG, a damn red van ran over it as the little bike was screaming across the road. I cried for days as I held the crushed bike in my little hands.. my dad said, "that is what you get, I told you to watch the cars". Trust me, as a 5 year old, this type of parental abuse will scar you for life. I am now 36 and still remember that damn day. It is funny how miniscule things such as that can mess a kid up. Well, today I was searching the web and came across an original in the box on EBAY, but way too much money they are asking. Luckily Kenner went out of business and usually, Foriegn toy companies buy the molds and diagrams when a company liquiadates. Lucky for me the deluxe set with Bricks, and ring of fire is availabe at "Back to Basics toys". It was less than $50 with shipping. I so look forward to getting it and showing it to my dad. just want to let him know that if I ever become a dad, I will be cognizant of how my future kid will feel if something bad happens to his favorite toy. By all means, I will replace it in a heartbeat. Thanks for reading

After my brother had all the cool toys (Action Man, Meccano, etc.) I finally had the toy that beat all other toys.

Had so much fun winding it up and leting it go. As a child I was very destructive so poor Evel didn't last too long in my hands, but I will never forget the joy and fun it gave me.

I had a Daredevil Debbie Stunt Cycle in about 1975. She was dressed JUST like EVEL, but she was a GIRL!!! I loved her to death, but a boy next door took her away from me and hid it under his house. I never found her again.

If anybody remembers having a Daredevil Debbie, or if anybody remembers hearing about one, please let me know!!

Evel was my hero, I loved this toy. One of the saddest moments of my childhood was when I brought my stunt bike to school and used it on the playground and the bike got clogged up with sand and was completely ruined. I was devasted. Then while throwing the figure up in the air I got it stuck up on the school roof. It was a traumatic day. Of course I saved up and bought another one!

I remember that toy. After I got bored watching Evel smash into my bedroom wall over again, I used the winder to "cut" my little brothers hair. Well, it got stuck and he "freaked out" and I got into BIG trouble after my mom had to cut his hair out of the winder. Oh...memories!

One of my earliest memories was the Evel Knievel Stunt Bike. My Dad made a 12' long sunt course out of plywood and plaster-of-paris, similar to how a person would construct a model railroad track. Ir had bumps, hills, ravines, and even artificial trees. We would crank the bike up as fast as we could to see if we could make it to the end. Each time we would make it all the way, my dad would elevate the back of the ramp higher. It would get to the point that the ramp would nearly touch the ceiling (we of course had a net)! It was awesome!

I remember my first stunt cycle. 1974...we lived in a house that had a paves driveway. The house sat on a hill. I'd rev that thing up until I almost stripped the gears. It would take off down that driveway. I considered it a major deal if it made it to the street. If it had ever gotten ran over by a car, I would have died, right there. I had the Stunt cycle, scramble van, and sky cycle, as well. I also remember taking off the belt around the figure. It was blue with stars on it and the buckle had a blue and red EK on it. I made a ring out of it. I'd go to school with that on and tell everyone that Evel Knievel gave it to me. In a way, I was right. Although Mom and Dad had to pay for the toys that came with it. ;) I miss those days. Thanks to EK, there were three trashed bicycles in my posession during the 70's. I got a good "butt whoopin'" on many occasion because I missed a jump over our metal garbage cans and crushed them. Then I would simulate a crash by flying down the hill in our backyard, leaping off at the last second, and watching that bike just waste itself into the fence. Thanks for stirring up those old memories. Happy landings Evel Knievel.

Yeah..thanks for reminding me..Used to stretch Evil's arms and legs out straight and lob him into the air to simulate his latest "skydiving" stunt going wrong. I'd inspect his twisted limbs at leisure afterwards. Everything's peachy in my grim world until one day he lands directly on top of the flat roofed garage and my very busy Dad refuses to get him down. EVER. So ta for bringing that memory back... That was truly the greatest toy I remember owning. All the great Tonka trucks I owned became things to jump rather than toys just in themselves. I don't want to get one at this age as I'm sure it will not be as good as I remember it.

The Verti=bird was pretty cool too as I recall! I had the one that was on like a styrofoam Coast Guard cutter (of course, it was about 30 years ago).

Just an update on my original story, I just got the praying mantis 1998 bike, fiqure and launcher and at coffee break, me and about 5 fellow employees are going to the parking lot to jump it over everything we can find!

When i brought it into work, the boy inside all the 40 year olds came back to life and their eyes lit up like christmas 1974.

People have said the praying mantis model is the best to use. I would say they are probably right, my bike runs and jumps and does wheelies just like the old one.

The surface it runs on makes all the difference. i tried to run it on ceramic tile and the tires cannot grip and it falls over quickly. Put it on normal carpet, concrete floor or unilock brick walkway and it works perfectly. On Carpet it went on forever.

Regardless of what toy you have, just having the Evel Knievel stunt bike will make you feel 30 years younger :)

I was in kinderaten in 1974 when I had my first encounter with the stunt cycle. It was an epiphany! My buddy Steve brought his to school on a day when we could bring toys from home, and--as there are few places more stocked with building blocks than a kindergarten classrom--we built major jumps and Evel handled the bulk of them. I couldn't stop begging my parents for one. About a year later I got one for my birthday (I don't think it was Xmas--could have been), and I played with it constantly and then regularly until it kicked. That was at least a year as I recall vividly having second grade classmates over afterschool and jumping it off of our two-tiered, concrete patio and into the lawn where it would still kick ass until it hit the tree at the end of the yard.

Thanks for letting me relive the memories! (actually I just saw on My Name Is Earl and about died!)

PS What was the name of the helicopter suspended by a wire to a rotating motor? You could control speed, height, fw/rev? I had one of those too. It didn't last as long, but I loved it!

This was my favorite toy when I was 12. Hard to believe that was 31 years ago! I just bought the Back to Basics set. I think this is at least as good as the original. It does make more noise, and the helmet is completly wrong. Other than that, it works fine.

I had been asking for the stunt cycle and scramble van for years. I finally got it in 1975. It was the best Christmas ever until the stunt cycle gears stripped. I told my mother I was going to write a letter to Ideal and tell them that they really ruined my Christmas. To their credit, they mailed me a new one a few weeks later. I had been looking to buy one on eBay, but they were much too expensive. For a little over $40 I have been able to relive a part of my childhood.

Spend the money. For a few minor inconveniences this is an awesome way to feel a few years younger. Now if they would only reissue the scramble van!

This toy brings back both good and bad memories, this was one of the worse christmas's of all time. Why? You ask, because I snuck into my mothers closet and found my Evel Stunt cycle, and then knowing it was there had to wait, and had to act surprised on christmas. It was horrid, I never looked for presents again.

Hi again! I've already posted a memory, but there's something I'd like to add.

I notice several people are posting on how bad the Back To Basics EK Darerdevil Stunt Set is vs. The Playing Mantis Set. Well, I have a difference of opinion.

I got that Playing Mantis set some years ago, and I gotta say, it was a real disappointment. The winder pops and clicks too much, and doesn't turn smoothly, and the cycle barely goes 2 feet. The best thing it has going for it are the decals.

I really like the Back To Basics set. While babysitting, I put it up against my vintage Derry Daring set, and it did just as well. It did wheelies, jumps, and an amazing somersault down a flight of stairs and kept on going! It went just as far and as fast as the original cycle. OK, so the winder sound is a little exaggerated, but it's still cool! I also took it to my after school center, and my students are inclined to agree. This set rocks!

So if you're looking for a comparable set to a vintage EK, the Back To Basics set is the way to go. Of course we all know, nothing beats the original!

I remember getting my Evel motorcycle in 1975. I jumped him off various size jumps made from dirt, paneling, plywood, etc. I even remebmer his jumpsuit being slightly shredded from "roadrash". When I learned to ride a 20 incher, my parents got me the Evel Knievel add on parts kit. This included the red, white, and blue starred seat, motocross style bars, and Evel's #1 handlebar plate. It rocked. Thought I could jump anything just like Evel- boy was I wrong.

Well i have to say Evel has stayed in the back of my mind, like a nice old faded memory. But that all changed the day i met my new friend, yep Ebay has brought the kid out of me again and i'm paying a heck of alot more money then my parents did buying back my memory of this cool toy.

My xmas morning back in the hazy 70's brought me this amazing toy along with the Scramble Van and ramp. I played with this toy alot and only managed to get evel cleanly over my scramble van once.

I recently purchased the Scramble Van and will be picking it up tomorrow(i can't wait)and all i need now is evel, the bike and the launcher.

Thank You all who wrote about the disappointing 2006 ideal stunt set. I was going to buy one and waste $60 but now i will look for the preying mantis 1998 bike to get some cool jumps in, and who knows, maybe one more jump over the scramble van may happen soon :)

It was Christmas of 1974 when I received the Evel Knievel Motorcycle in one box, and the Stunt van in another. Absolutely my favorite all-time toy. My brother and I used to race each other in the house, and then out in the yard. I remember even driving them through small mud puddles with the water flinging off the rear tire. Loved it!!! My greatest moments about evel knievel had to have been playing outside waiting and hounding my mom when he was about to do one of his jumps on tv. the last one of course was the most exciting and the most sadning for my mom and i when he failed to cross Snake River Canyon. We both stared at the tv waiting to see if he would come out alive on this one. the announcers were in disbelief and thought he coudnt have survived. then the tumble in the waters edge... we were stunned and then he emerged... thank you mom for letting me see most of his jumps... gave me great memories that will last a lifetime...oh yeah and thanks for affording the stunt cycle. :)

The Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle just ranked #47 on VH1's new show "I Love Toys." The show counts down the 100 greatest toys of all time. It's great to see that the stunt cycle made it on the list but it really should have been in the top 25, at least. The show also has a short nightly segment where they try to jump the stunt cycle over various bizarre things.

Many of the other toys on this site are also on the list like Big Wheels, Stretch Armstrong, Gijoes, Hot Wheels, and Rock 'em Sock 'em robots.

I do have a pretty good story. It's about Team America, which came out right after Ideal stopped making the EK stunt cycle. I was mad Ideal did that, but I settled for Team America and the Scare Cycles which not everyone remembers.

I had to go to kinder care daycare when I was a kid. So, to amuse myself! I took 2 boards from board games (Sorry & Monopoly), 2 cinder blocks, set up a ramp down the hall. Reved the gyro as fast as you could imagine and let go. The motorcycle went faster than ever and jumped 5 kids laying down watching. I was the hero of the day.

Today, I'm 35 years old and still bring out my EK Chopper and run it every now and then.

I remember my Mom taking me to Western Auto and I picked out the Stunt set and the scramble van, to which I have to this day, it was and is the best toy I ever owned. Mine was the rare chrome stunt cycle, with the chrome forks, handle bars and engine. I still have a boxed Strato-Cycle that was never opened and I cant bring myself to open it up now, because a friend said it would be worth more to leave it sealed. My Mom cant believe how many Evel Knievel toys I have bought off of eBay in the last year and how expensive they have become. I also echo the remarks about the reissue stunt cycle "actually it is modeled after the trail bike," one thing I have found out, if You put the reissue in an original Energizer, it will go a lot better, something about the reissue's energizer that is not right! Playing Mantiss is the set to have, as far as the quality, it is just as good if not better than the original ones, they flat out FLY!!!! Also in the early 80s, Ideal came out with the Team America Stunt Cycles and they were made more like a dirt bike, but man would they go. The boxes still looked like the original Evel Knievel boxes, but in 1977, Ideal dropped Evels name from their toys, because of Evel getting sent to jail for beating up his manager with a ball bat. Dont mess with Evel! lmao. Thanks for taking me to Western Auto that day Moma, Love Your son. Z. F.

For sure my favorite toy of all time. I received the stunt cycle for x-mas 78. When spring arived we took him outside and got to close to the sand box.Not good. Once sand got in the gears it was all over for the bike. So we switched to jumping our bikes. We set up a ramp in the middle of our street about 3 or 4 feet high. My record jump was over 15 feet on my schwinn stingray. I still have the stingray but had to resort to E-bay for a replascment original stunt bike. Thankfully I never wrecked like Evel did.

I remember this toy spred like a wild fire through our neighborhood. You could always tell which kid was the rookie with this toy because his knuckels had fresh scabs on them from winding the crank and scraping the cement. While us pros on the block had thick scar tissue on our knuckles from months of constant crank scrapes. True lovers of this toy know exactly what I am talking about.

Interesting how everyone's birth years are so close...

I got my first stunt cycle in 1974. We had a pretty small basement but I'd run Evel over jumps and at the wall time and time again. Eventually, he stopped working. I think after buying me a 2 or 3 Stunt Cycles, my Dad was fed up with them breaking (What do you expect, Dad? 7 year old + concrete wall + high speed plastic toy = death for ANY toy) and called Ideal to complain about the Stunt Cycles breaking constantly. Ideal sent a brand new boxed Stunt Cycle in the mail. For some reason, I remember being extremely excited about picking up the free cycle from the post office. I remember thinking my Dad must have been magic somehow to make a phone call and have free toys show up. I played with them outside from then on. Such great times with the EK toys. I remember a kid down the street selling me his Stunt Stadium for a buck. I'll bet his Mom was mad when he got home. He offered. :)

Later, I would have the Sky Cycle, Chopper, Dragster, Crash Car, and Super Jet Cycle. As fun as they were, they never compared to the speed and fun of the original stunt cycle. I remember thinking Ideal had "jumped the shark" (pun intended and reference inferred) when they started releasing all the cars, adventure sets, and the StratoCycle. All that stuff just got too far away from the core of why we loved Evel Knievel. A guy, a motorcycle, airtime, and concrete.

I, too, picked up the new Knievel Dare Devil Stunt set. It's a neat set but I was disappointed in several things. I despise the half-helmet instead of the full face version (How could they do this?). The bike (as someone else pointed out) is incredibly loud. The booklet has neat stuff in it but all the images are pixelated like the designer just pulled a bunch of low-res jpegs off the net and added them to the book...quality be d*mned. The flames and base are cardboard. Still, it was pretty neat to be able to open a brand new Evel Knievel toy in 2006. If you're looking for a set to play with and not keep as a collectible, track down the 1998 Playiing Mantis version. It's not as authentic looking but performs much better than the new Ideal/Slinky Toys version.

I tend to agree with MD about the quality (or lack of) of the remoulded EK Deluxe Stunt Set. Although it's a great idea and i suppose it is a great set to have, it is a set which will have to be well looked after as it does not have the play value that the old ones had, though i bought it for myself and was full of excitement when i opened it, i think my 8 year old daughter got more enjoyment out of it than i did. I have to say though he did travel the length of my living room (19') before he hit the patio doors and stopped and that was while pulling a wheelie, i dunno maybe i got lucky with him. But he still doesn't have the power or the speed of the originals and is it my imagination or is this little beast about 1000 db louder than the old ones. anyway im not totally disappointed with this as it is a nice thing to have, but i wish they'd have paid more care into the quality.

I clearly remember Evel. My brother and I each got them for Christmas back in the 70's. We had the cycle, and also they made him into some kind of "adventurer", because soon after he came out there were camping sets and other activity sets far removed from being a stuntman.

I remember the figures came with a helmet and a cane- to assist Evel in walking cause of his multiple injuries! Another interesting thing is, my figure came dressed in a royal blue suit, and my brothers in the more common white.

What a cool website!!! I'm actually choked up reading all this. This was, hands down, the best toy I ever had. Can't exactly remember when I had it - it seems to me sometime between 75 and 78. Anyway, the only reason I googled this topic and found this forum is because I'm a writer and am incorporating this toy into a novel. I have to agree with RS and MD about this new Evel Knievel stunt cycle. It came off the launcher and fell over after a couple of feet. I think it has something to do with the gears on the new bike. If you plan on buying this for your kid to experience the fun you had with this toy you will not be happy with your purchase and I recommend you buy the Playing Mantis version. However if you are looking for a pretty cool display model, this is the one for you.

I had this toy for christmas in '78. It came with a blue hand-cranked launcher and once you let it go, the cycle would take off. Evil was elastic and you could position him on the cycle in different ways for his stunts. I wish the 70's never left. Everything was cool and easy from television to toys. All you had to worry about was doing good in school!

I have just been reading some of these entries. I was relieved to discover that I'm not the only 40 year old 'kid' that still has one of these. My original has been retired to a shelf but I bought the Playing Mantis version about 5 years ago under the pretence that it was for my step-daughter. She is NOT allowed to touch it!! On the rare occasions that I have the house to myself I turn into a 10 year old again. Out comes the ramp (an old scratched up Skynyrd L.P.) and Evel is flying down staircases again. Man I feel sorry for kids these days, you can keep the X-boxes and Game Cubes, we had real toys with real memories!!

P.S. A friend just informed me that he is going to buy one of the new ones for 'HIS daughter'

I've got to echo MD. I had this as a kid and loved the fact that it would go off ramps, hit a wall, do some flips and take off in another direction. I bought this for my boys for Christmas from Back to Basics and it did not travel even 1 foot! I tried numerous times with similar results. I called the company and they sent me a replacement. The second one went about 4 feet. Needless to say, both are going back. I'm pissed that they got my hopes up that such a great toy was going to be remade. If Ideal, or whoever is reproducing it, is going to bring this back out, they should have used decent enough materials to make the motorcycle travel like it used to. Surely they know that the kids who played with this now are going to buy it for their kids - and are going to know that this POS does not work anything like the original.

Best toy ever!!!!

evel did things no other toy could.

the evel rider became quite disfigured after several firey crashes

the bike rides on forever in my memories

off the attic stairs off the garage roof at the empty church parking lot over a board and a couple bricks smashing into every one of my other toys down the rain drains at school off the cliff at the quary park

but I think this toy profoundly impacted my life and made me the rider I am today.

Thanks evel

Everyone is right...best toy EVER made. I kept all my toys over the years...some still have the original boxes. Can't explain the feeling I get when I played with these toys, or how I feel when I look at them today. My wife knew how much they meant to me and purchased a cabinet for Christmas a few years ago to display my EK toys. They are proudly displayed in our hallway...best present she ever bought me. I have two boys and bought them the new released toy in 1998 by Playing Mantis. I got to re-live my childhood all over again as we reved up the cycle and watch Evel wheelie or jump...the boys still play with them today and have them displayed in their bedrooms. All the new video games they have and play, and they still enjoy the toy. XBox needs to make an Evel Knievel game...I'd buy it! The new Ideal toy is awesome...I'll be buying one soon. Evel was my idol. We live in Ohio, and when I was a boy my Dad took me to Kings Island to see Evel Jump 14 greyhound buses. The weather had been so bad during the week that Evel came out and jumped 10 buses several times for practice. He jumped them like it was nothing...I got to see Evel Knievel jump three times that day. One of my best days ever. This toy makes me feel like a big kid...I LOVE IT!

Great toy when I was a kid had so many great memories. I recently found two new ones in the box from Ideal. They made some more from the old molds in the late 90's. There brand new Deluxe set with over 40 accesories and a ticket with authenticity. I have one extra I will be selling. If anyone is interested I have them on Ebay or email me.
