My older brother and I used to play this. He usually won until I found a new strategy. I'd use most of my bombs to surround a decoy and then put my flag behind just one bomb. It didn't always work, but when it did...oh the power of beating him! I think we used the "kablooey" term too.

LOVED this game. One of my all time favorites, along with Clue. I have a wooden set. Sorry to see "they" ruined it in the sense of reversing the #s as to which pieces rank. I remember I used to put a few nines up front to scout...reserve my miner 8s to the back and only pull them up to front after I figured out where teh opponents strong hold was. I'd put my 3s and 4s not in my second rank, and get a lay of the land. Then I'd keep the spy near the flag...figuring the 1 would eventually head for the flag.
My friend, Nora, and I used to play a variant. We'd put all our pieces faces down and shuffle them around....then we had to set them up in order we picked them up from front row to back, left or right. Which REALLY made you "make do." VERY unpredictable game them.
Battleship was great too.

Ahhh Stratego one of my favorite games of all-time. My brother 3 1/2 years my senior, beat me all the time, it only made me a better player. He tortured me I remember one game where he stationed 7's and 6's on the borders because they were the highest pieces on the board until I couldn't move....dam him!

Stratego is a fantastic game. I used to go on a cycling trips in holland, and every single youth hostel had a copy, so I would play them each time with my dad or my brother. (I was around 8-10) When we stopped doing those holidays I decided I wanted my own copy, so I got one for my birthday. It's always a great game to play.

When the last time I played Stratego, I got my brother's flag even though I lost my 1,3,4,4,and four scouts but won by a lucky out-of-boundes miner!

When I started playing Stratego,I always used a General[#2] to get my opponent's Colonels-Miners [#3-#8] and use my Miners to sneek past the enemy lines and disarm enemy Bombs. I have a hint about the setup called:Blitzering? Ha! I forgot. When you set up you put your Genral in the front lines sorounded by high ranking officers or Scouts [#9] or both! I forgot again! Just in case, go to http://www.edcollins.com/stratego.Then tell me if I am correct!

I played a recent version of this game & it's backwards from the original!! In the original, the men that took out the mines were number "8". Now they are number "3". The strongest men were lower numbers, now they are higher numbers. Confusing!

We had this game. My brother loved it, but I hated it. It reminded me of chess. Any game where you have to think that much wasn't fun for me then. I would just move random pieces so that I would lose as quickly as possible.

We used to play a variation when we got bored of the normal rules. We'd turn all the pieces around so you couldn't see me, but your opponent could. Kinda stupid now that I'm older (35) but at the time we thought we were pretty slick. There was another one based on this premise, but it had kings and knights. The pieces fit into holes on a plastic board and you had 'catapults' which were just little bellows that would blow air thru tubes in the bottom of the board and cause some pieces to pop off. Wish I remembered the name of that one....

Me and my brother used to play this all the time. It was a great strategic game and enabled us to have hours of fun playing game after game.

It was an sunny summer afternoon ritual to play Stratego after lunch in the early 1980's, on one my friend's stoop in Brooklyn. The games would end just in time to catch GET SMART on the tube. I could really bluff my opponent; make a scout[#9] chase down a general[#2].

Spent a considerable amount of time playing this game. Everytime one of our pieces would hit the bomb we made a large "BOOM" noise.

I first played this game at my old freind Tim Clair's house in the mid 70's. I have a few of these game boards. I also have one that is a electronic verson sold in the 1980's called (The Generals). Stratego was and is still a easy and fun Game.
